The wonderful Gili Islands The Gili Islands are a small group of three islands located just off the north-western corner of Lombok.  Originally occupied by local fishermen as a base for their daily fishing excursions, the islands have become very popular as they offer something for everyone. Each island has developed a distinct character of its own, so there is a place to suit everyone, no matter what they like to experience while on holidays. All transport is either by horse drawn cart (Cidomo),  bicycle or foot.  No motorised transport anywhere, not that you would need it as the islands are quite small. Gili Trawangan, or Gili T as it has become known, is the largest of the three islands, offering high quality international resort style accommodation right down to the most basic of home-stay.  The beach-front of Gili T is lined with bars and restaurants offering every type of food imaginable, and all at very reasonable prices. Gili T is known locally as “the party island”, as there are numerous bars which party late into the night, so keep this in mind when booking your accommodation if you like to get some sleep. You should also note that there is a mosque in the centre of the island, with a call to prayer 5 times a day by LOUD speaker! Gili Meno is the second largest island of the group, and is much quieter than Gili T, more aligned with romance and love than dancing and clubbing.  The beach in places is covered with broken coral which can be hard on the feet, but just a few metres into the ocean, there are numerous coral reefs (hence the coral on the beach) offering excellent snorkelling.  The water around the Gili Islands is very clean and warm too! Gili Air is even more laid back than Gili Meno, and offers an even more intimate feel.  If you want to just relax and chill out, this is the island for you!
