Currencies of Lombok

The currency used on Lombok is the Indonesian Rupiah (currency symbol IDR), though almost everyone will accept American Dollars (USD$) if you don’t have Rupiah. There are numerous money changers, especially around the Senggigi tourist resort area, though you are best to shop around for the best exchange rate as it varies widely. If you are using a tour guide, he will be able to advise you as to where to get the best exchange rate. While you can certainly change US$ for IDR at banks, you will receive a slightly lower rate, so the small money changers are the best bet. If you are changing travellers cheques, you will receive an even lower rate. BEFORE you leave anywhere after changing money, COUNT IT!  It is too late when you get outside to find that you have not received what you were told.  Always count the money in front of the person conducting the exchange, there is no rush.  Take your time, and if it is not right, or you are just not sure, discuss it right there and then. Tip:  When you exchange money, the money changers prefer larger notes in good condition.  If you are changing money on a daily basis, make sure you always carry some smaller notes for buying small items as many of the small shops where you are likely to find that “special deal” do not carry much money to give as change. While theft is not a huge problem on Lombok, do keep in mind that many are poor here, so an opportunity to feed their family for the day is unlikely to be missed.  The vast majority are very very honest though. Having said that, do not leave valuables such as cameras, mobile phones, etc. laying around, you are simply inviting trouble.
