Best beaches on Lombok

Lombok is surrounded with some of the most beautiful white coral sand beaches to be found anywhere. As you travel further north toward the imposing Mount Rinjani volcano, which sits at the very northern end of the island, the beach sand become a dark grey, and at times almost black in colour. As you well into tropical regions, the ocean is warm, and generally very clear, especially in the more sheltered locations where the often strong currents do not disturb the sand, thereby stirring up fine sediments. Lombok is very popular with snorkellers, who have access to many coral reefs which lie just below the surface and close to land, so a boat is not always necessary. Given the right conditions, Lombok has some great surf beaches too, and getting there is often surprisingly easy.  The resort area of Senggigi has ‘Senggigi Point’, a surf break just offshore, right next to the main tourist area! Beaches to the south of Lombok are the main lure for surfers, with pure white coral sand, and few people to share the waves with. If you are a little more adventurous, why not go to the Gili Islands, a short boat ride from Lombok and try out scuba diving.  A short training session will see you with an ‘Open Water’ diving license, which is valid world-wide. The Gili Islands offer fantastic snorkelling and diving, with numerous reefs inhabited by a wide range of marine life, they are a haven for divers the world over. The Gili Islands (a small group of three islands) have become popular as each island has developed its own individual personality, so there is an island for everyone, no matter what you want to do.
